Experts: Legal cannabis can spur Caribbean economies File photo by Jeff K. Mayers ENTREPRENEURS eager to enter the marijuana business are calling on the Government to bring legislation which will allow them to do so without fear of being arrested. The Cannabis Control Bill, aimed at legitimising marijuana retail businesses in Trinidad and Tobago, has been a topic of discussion since the amendment to the Dangerous Drugs Act in December 2019. The amendments allowed for the possession of up to 30 grammes of marijuana and growing four female plants for every adult in a home. The bill was sent to a joint select committee (JSC) led by Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi in 2019, which was initially due to report to Parliament in February last year, but there have been some setbacks.

Relatives of returning T&T oil workers from the Gulf of Mexico wave as the workers leave Piarco International Airport after their arrival yesterday. Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and National Security Minister Stuart Young are defending the fairness of this country’s COVID-19 exemption policy in the face of stinging criticism that their children were allowed to jump the exemption queue. However, Rowley is also indicating that the Government plans to revisit and make changes to the policy. Pirogue to the Privy Council?

Pirogue to the Privy Council? Thursday 24 December 2020 THE COURT of Appeal on Tuesday ruled the State cannot deport an 11-year-old Venezuelan while her status is pending in court. In response, Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi said he was untroubled by this procedural ruling. However, he also signalled a willingness to let the question of the child’s legal status go all the way to London. “This is a matter which I would obviously expect to go ultimately to the Privy Council,” Mr Al-Rawi told a television station. It should not go that far. Notwithstanding that the judicial committee of the Privy Council remains this country’s highest court, the AG should let the Court of Appeal have the final say when the time comes.
