Biden faces a skeptical Democratic senator tonight: Joe Manchin

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin has made his resistance to elements of the agenda that President Biden will discuss tonight clear.
Manchin, who holds a crucial vote in the 50-50 Senate, will be in attendance tonight for Biden’s speech. In many ways, the fate of much of Biden’s agenda will come down to the West Virginia lawmaker.
In addition to saying he is “very uncomfortable” with trillions in new spending programs, Manchin addressed concerns with raising capital gains taxes to help pay for the plans. He also brushed back talk among Democratic leaders to try to advance the proposals along party lines through the budget process, as they are now planning to do next month.
A government office created by California Democrats is monitoring hashtags, classifying political speech it opposes by “threat level”, taking screenshots of posts, and then storing the information indefinitely, before reporting the offending speech to social media companies for censorship. Jenna Dresner, the senior public information officer for the Office of Election Cybersecurity, boasted that the government office maintains an internal database of online speech coded by threat level, and that its censorship calls had resulted in removals 77% of the time. Desner is a member of the Los Angeles County Young Democrats, who had formerly worked for Rep. Karen Bass, Attorney General Xavier Becerra, and other Democrat figures. The Office of Election Cybersecurity operates under Secretary of State Alex Padilla, who was chosen by Governor Newsom to replace Senator Kamala Harris. The California Department of Justice announced this week that it will expand access to and begin releasing certain gun violence prevention data that it had withheld from a state-funded University of California research center.
Less than a week into the job, Attorney General Rob Bonta committed to releasing data that track gun sales, restraining orders and other ownership information to a team at the University of California Firearm Violence Research Center.
The announcement comes weeks after researchers raised concerns that the agency was denying them certain records that rendered some studies impossible to complete.

WASHINGTON The National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Friday reversed restrictions on federally-funded research using fetal tissue and organs of aborted babies.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a notice to the “extramural research community” – researchers who are not at NIH facilities – that it would be removing the Trump administration’s 2019 requirement that a federal ethics advisory board review all proposals for fetal tissue research.
