Besides winning their primaries last night, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Hala Ayala, and Attorney General Mark Herring all have one thing in common: They live in Northern Virginia. So does Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin.
Northern Virginia has not only been the engine of Virginia’s shift to a blue state, it’s also the state’s biggest economic driver. 45 percent of all personal income in Virginia was earned by Northern Virginia residents in 2018. RICHMOND (WINA) – Former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe easily wins the opportunity to serve for a second time after Democrats chose him as their nominee by a landslide Tuesday. McAuliffe got 62% of the Democratic primary vote to easily outdistance the closest challenger in former state Delegate Jennifer Carrol Foy who got 20%. Only Mills Godwin has served as Governor twice in Virginia’s modern era.
McAuliffe in his acceptance speech talked about how his prior administration, followed by Ralph Northam’s over the past nearly 8 years, has moved Virginia forward by bringing everyone up. He promised “we will not go back”.

Former Governor Terry R. McAuliffe easily won the nomination to be the 2021 Democratic candidate for Virginia governor during Tuesday’s Democratic Primary Election.
With just 454,664 people voting in the election statewide, McAuliffe took 61.78 percent of all ballots cast in the gubernatorial race. His next closest competitor was Senator Jennifer McClellan, who garnered just 11.59 percent of the vote.
McAuliffe will now face off against Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin in the November election.
Hala S. Ayala, a former cybersecurity specialist with the federal government, won the nomination to be the Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, carrying 37.36 percent of the vote, with Sam Rasoul coming in second, with 24.24 percent. Ayala will run against Republican candidate Winsome Sears in November.
