Beloved by financial advisers who do business with his organization by paying for potential client leads, Dave Ramsey stepped into some controversy last year when an advertiser who promised consumers freedom from burdensome timeshare real estate contracts was sued by the state of Washington.
A widely popular radio host who preaches the gospel of debt-free living, Dave Ramsey on his website promotes a variety of financial services products, companies and professionals, including financial advisers. Advisers pay the advertising fee and are part of a website directory, called SmartVestor Pros.
Landmark Technology, a patent troll that has spent 20 years threatening and suing small businesses over bogus patents, and received EFF’s Stupid Patent of the Month award in 2019, has been sued by the State of Washington.
Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson has filed a lawsuit claiming that Landmark Technology has violated the state’s Patent Troll Protection Act, which bans “bad faith” assertions of patent infringement. Following a widespread campaign of patent demand letters, more than 30 states passed some kind of law placing limits on bad-faith patent assertions.
These laws face an uphill battle to be enforced. First of all, the Constitution places important limits on the government’s ability to penalize the act of seeking legal redress. Second, the Federal Circuit has specifically held that a high bar of bad faith must be established for laws that would penalize patent assertion.
Gov. Inslee signs police accountability package, some cops have lingering concern May 18, 2021 at 6:01 pm
Gov. Inslee signs an historic package of police accountability bills into law on Tuesday. (Office of the Governor)
Exactly one week before the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, Governor Inslee signed on Tuesday a large package of police accountability bills into law.
The dozen or so bills the Legislature passed this session are policies a handful of lawmakers spent the interim working on last year, along with families of those killed by police locally.
The proposals became a top priority for the Legislature after the world watched Floyd’s death. Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than 8 minutes while he pleaded for his life and uttered the words, “I can’t breathe.”
