A Midwest City doctor was found guilty of one out of five second-degree murder charges on Friday. The Oklahoma County jury deliberated for more than 26 hours before reaching a verdict. A sequestered jury went back to work on only a few hours of sleep. County officials said some of them fell asleep in the courtroom overnight. They had a short break on Friday before returning to one of the longest running deliberations in the history of the Oklahoma County courthouse. “They’ve never told us they’re deadlocked,” said attorney Tommy Adler. “They’ve just told us they want to keep working.”

McGirt ruling results in two more Oklahoma death row reversals

Oklahoman An Oklahoma death row inmate who was just weeks away from execution in 2015 for killing his infant daughter had his conviction reversed Thursday because the child was a Cherokee and the crime occurred on the tribe’s reservation. Benjamin Robert Cole was one of two death row inmates whose convictions were overturned as the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals continued to apply last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in the McGirt case. James Chandler Ryder, sentenced to death for one of two murders he committed in 1999, also had his convictions overturned. Four death row inmates have received reversals since the high court issued its ruling in the McGirt case, which has led most of eastern Oklahoma and some central Oklahoma counties to be deemed Indian Country for the purposes of criminal prosecutions.

According to a press release issued by the state attorney general s office in Oklahoma, the suit is challenging that “HISA gives a private corporation broad regulatory authority over Oklahoma s horse racing industry, and does so with no funding mechanism, forcing the financial burden onto states. If a state refuses to pay, the state s legislature and executive agencies would be punitively banned from collecting taxes or fees

Oklahoma City School Board Calls For Investigative Audit Of Santa Fe South Charter Schools

Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education meeting Monday, April 12, 2021. Oklahoma City Public Schools on Monday called on State Auditor Cindy Byrd to audit Santa Fe South Charter Schools. In a unanimous vote, the district’s Board of Education made the request following an hourlong executive session. State law says the state auditor “shall” fulfill the request and a spokesman for the state auditor’s office said Byrd had not received the letter Tuesday. “The purpose of the special audit requested is to determine compliance with statutes, rules, policies and internal control procedures,” an OKCPS statement said. “In light of comments shared at the OSDE Board of Education meeting on Friday, April 9, the Board felt this was an important step to take as an authorizer of Santa Fe South.”
