Republican candidates for next Arkansas governor taking shape

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the former white house press secretary for the Trump administration, officially announced her candidacy for governor of Arkansas on Monday (Jan. 25).
She joins Attorney General Leslie Rutledge and Lt. Governor Tim Griffin in the race for the Republican nomination.
News of Sanders running for governor doesn’t come as a surprise to many in Arkansas.
Political experts say she does come into the race as the front runner.

House prosecutors walked the article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump to the Senate on Monday night, setting the stage for a trial to begin Feb. 9.
Nine House members led by Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., will serve as prosecutors, who are called managers, in the trial.
House Democrats were joined by 10 Republicans in voting Jan. 13 to charge Trump with inciting insurrection at the Capitol a week earlier after a riot left five people dead. A violent mob smashed windows and doors while storming the building and occupying offices, including the Senate chamber, where the trial will be held.

A federal judge issued a temporary block to a set of Arkansas laws that, if enacted, would likely lead to the closure of the state’s only surgical abortion clinic.
On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker issued a two-week restraining order on the enforcement of laws, coming mere hours before they were scheduled to take effect.

In just the six days since Trump decamped for Florida, his former White House press secretary announced her candidacy for governor of Arkansas; the Arizona Republican Party formally censured the GOP governor, a former GOP senator and another former senator s widow; primary challengers emerged to take on Republicans who supported impeachment; and a moderate Republican from Ohio announced his retirement from the Senate, opening a door for one or more Trump loyalists.
