Arkansas Attorney General Leading Group In Support Of NRA In Lawsuit

Credit Michael Hibblen / KUAR News Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge on Tuesday announced she is leading a coalition of 16 states that have filed an amicus brief supporting the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James. The NRA’s lawsuit seeks to block James’s attempt in a separate lawsuit to dissolve the NRA, which has come under intense scrutiny for alleged mismanagement of funds and potential violation of rules of operation for nonprofits. In an August lawsuit, James said leaders of the NRA “instituted a culture of self-dealing, mismanagement and negligent oversight… that was illegal, oppressive and fraudulent”. She argued the corruption was so broad that total dissolution of the organization would be necessary.

Judge Temporarily Halts Four Arkansas Abortion Laws

Credit Planned Parenthood Great Plains A federal judge has blocked four laws restricting access to abortion in Arkansas just hours after they took effect. U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker on Tuesday granted the request from abortion rights groups, issuing a two-week restraining order against the laws. Baker had previously put a halt to the laws in 2017, though a federal appeals court later vacated that ruling. In a statement, the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas said clinics were forced to cancel appointments and only provide medication abortion while the laws were temporarily in effect. “Today, we got a preview of what would happen if these laws took effect permanently. It caused uncertainty about whether Arkansans can have access to abortion care and forced patients to be turned away, which is absolutely unacceptable,” said Jenny Ma, senior staff attorney with the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Half-empty? Half-full? Neither empty nor full

Half-empty? Half-full? Neither empty nor full Steve Brawner The glass-half-empty perspective is that the past 12 months have stretched this democracy kind of thin. The glass-half-full perspective is that it’s still pretty strong. Either way, the glass is neither empty nor full. Now that the Electoral College has cast its votes, it’s past time for everyone to concede that Joe Biden won.  No doubt some of those 158 million total votes were miscounted or cast improperly, benefitting both sides. No process is perfect. But this election was neither stolen nor rigged, as President Trump has claimed. So says Attorney General William Barr, a staunch defender and appointee of Trump’s who resigned Monday. Barr recently told the Associated Press that he had “not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election.”
