The Year in Review: How B C responded to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020

by Craig Takeuchi on December 23rd, 2020 at 6:00 PM 1 of 18 2 of 18 It’s the year we all wish didn’t happen. But it did and what a year it was. For many people, the changes witnessed this year are the most far-reaching they have seen in their lifetimes, and would have been unthinkable a year ago. Everyone s experience of the pandemic greatly differed, ranging from mild frustrations to tragic losses and hardships.   What was common, however, was the uncertainty of what would happen next as we continued along. Looking back over what has occurred since the COVID-19 pandemic began in British Columbia, a great deal has taken place within this province alone that can be both surprising and intriguing to review.

COVID-19 in B C : Farm outbreak at four sites, Big White outbreak expands to 96 cases, and more

by Craig Takeuchi on December 22nd, 2020 at 8:30 PM 1 of 3 2 of 3 Over recent days, new case counts have been below 700 cases and that continues with today’s numbers. However, other case categories revealed mixed results. After B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix mentioned at yesterday’s briefing that the nine deaths in Interior Health over the weekend were more than the region had over the course of the pandemic, something to note is that today’s case counts for Interior Health is on par with Vancouver Coastal Health. Meanwhile, incidents of public health defiance continue to arise. Nanaimo RCMP announced today that 11 youths were fined for gathering in a parking lot in Nanaimo on the weekend without practising any health measures and after not following an officer’s direction to disperse.

B C limits food-delivery company fees charged to restaurants during COVID-19 pandemic

by Craig Takeuchi on December 22nd, 2020 at 4:30 PM 1 of 1 2 of 1 As B.C. restaurants struggle to weather the economic storm of the COVID-19 pandemic, food and beverage establishments will gain protection from potentially excessive fees charged by delivery companies. B.C. Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth announced today (December 22) that an Emergency Program Act program order, effective as of Sunday (December 27), temporarily limits fees that food-delivery companies are charging to restaurants. The maximum fees that food-delivery companies can charge is 15 percent. An additional limit of five percent on other related fees such as online ordering and processing fees is to ensure companies can’t shift their charges to other fees.
