Law Society of England and Wales president steps down over long-running client dispute 04 March 2021 High Court decision to reopen case against London-based litigator David Greene triggers early departure The President of the Law Society of England & Wales, David Greene, has announced he will step down from his role early to defend allegations made against him by a former client.  The experienced litigator, who is also the senior partner of London firm Edwin Coe, faces a forthcoming private prosecution in the Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT), arising from a costs dispute with a former client who accused him of misleading the court.

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal heard in January that Mohammed Imran Hussain admitted being abusive during a phone conversation with the client, who had been convicted of assault. Hussain, a solicitor from Birmingham, spoke to the client after a complaint had been made to the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Recordings of the conversation were provided to the SRA.  SRA: Practitioner agrees to penalty after admitting to being abusive during call The tribunal heard that the solicitor, admitted in 2003, was fearful that the client’s complaint could lead to the loss of his livelihood and invited him to withdraw the allegation.
