All the electric vehicles that stood out at the Shanghai Auto Show
The 19th annual Shanghai Auto Show delivered a bevy of electric and tech-centric vehicles this year. Chinese, European and U.S. automakers showed off their latest offerings in every price segment, from the budget-minded Wuling Hong Guang Mini via a joint venture between SAIC Motor Corp., General Motors Co. and Liuzhou Wuling Motors Co. to the luxury Mercedes EQS and everything in between.
Several automakers touted the capabilities of their driver assistance systems, using terminology that suggested they
could be autonomous if only regulators allowed it. Let’s be clear, these systems are not autonomous. Other automakers stopped short of those claims, but did publicize the software capabilities of their vehicles a movement that has been underway since Tesla rose in popularity.

XPeng Motors reveals its new P5 ahead of the electric-powered sedan’s public debut at the upcoming 2021 Shanghai auto show.
Set to challenge the Tesla Model 3, NIO ET7 and BMW i4 in what is shaping up as a particularly hard-fought EV market segment in China and elsewhere, the 4-door is XPeng Motors’ third production BEV, following the G3 SUV launched in 2018 and P7 fastback-style sedan introduced in 2020.
Among the P5’s key innovations is an in-house-developed XPilot 3.5 autonomous driving system that is being pitched as the most advanced in its class. It uses 32 sensors, including two dual-prism lidar units, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 13 cameras and a positioning unit to provide what XPeng Motors describes as a Navigation Guided Pilot function for hands-off driving in suitable conditions.
It s the first production EV with automotive-grade LiDAR tech.
It s called the P5, has a large display screen, and runs Xmart OS 3.0 software, but no, it isn t a new smartphone. Chinese automotive startup XPeng may not be known for much more than blatantly copying Tesla s website design last year but that could all be set to change with the new P5 all-electric sedan. The XPeng P5 is the company s third production model but is significant in that it is said to be the first production EV in the world that employs automotive-grade LiDAR technology. The XPeng s various smart driver-assist technologies will be powered by the company s XPILOT 3.5 architecture that was developed in-house. The range of its abilities is impressive indeed and underlines the progress that the East has made recently following Honda s unveiling of the first Level 3 autonomous car.
