Public Safety Building is top draw at town meeting

PRINCETON Whether the town moves to take yet another first step toward building a new Public Safety Building will be decided by voters at the annual town meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15, under a tent on the playing field at Thomas Prince School.
The Advisory Committee will make its recommendation on the town meeting floor.
Studies on whether to construct a police/fire/emergency services complex at the site of the old Princeton Center School on Boylston Avenue to replace the building on the town hall campus have been ongoing since 2017.
Voters face override request to fund Rutland budget

RUTLAND Voters at the annual town meeting will face a request for a $500,000 Proposition 2½ override in order to fund the fiscal 2022 budget without gutting town services.
In a first-time move, the meeting will be held at 6 p.m. May 8 at the Wachusett Regional High School auditorium.
Just days before the meeting, final numbers are being pulled together by the Finance Committee, which is waiting for an updated school district request, after the state has released state aid numbers.
The town was headed into the town meeting with a deficit of $405,000, according to Finance Committee documents on the town website. With requested increases from the school district and various town departments, this amount jumped to just over $1 million. It was eventually wrestled down to $659,511 through “non-devastating cuts by departments, revenue re-calculations and insurance negotiations.”

The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted Friday to approve emergency regulations granting the state education commissioner authority to determine when hybrid and remote models may no longer count towards required student learning time hours.
The move effectively allows Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley to require in-person learning. The vote was 8-3 in favor of the motion after a more-than-two-hour meeting.

Board members heard from health experts and Riley before they cast their votes Friday afternoon.

PAXTON Planning for the unknown in the Age of COVID-19, selectmen are trying to figure out when to hold the annual town meeting.
Last year, it was delayed from May to August.
This year, the tradition would be to hold it on May 3.
Selectmen at their meeting Feb. 8 discussed the concerns about having it inside. But another outside meeting posed complications as well.
“I’m hoping we can still have it May 3, but it may be outside,” Chairman Peter Bogren Jr. said.
Town Administrator Carol Riches raised concerns about the weather, but Bogren said he was not so worried about the weather as social distancing.
