Kalachand Sain, Director, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, a department of science facility, probing the cause behind the flood, said, “Satellite imagery has thrown early signs of a rockfall in the upper reaches, which may have caused the glacier to break and the water to come gushing downstream.”
Efforts are underway to rescue workers trapped inside a tunnel in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, two days after flash floods in the region swept away almost everything along the Alaknanda river system.

New Delhi, Feb 09: The death toll from the Uttarakhand glacier disaster rose to 31 with five more bodies being recovered, officials said on Tuesday as multiple agencies raced against time to reach about 30 workers trapped inside a tunnel in a power project site and 175 people remained missing.
