One dead in fatal shooting at West Side intersection Monday morning

View Comments EVANSVILLE, Ind.  Police believe the victim of a fatal shooting on Evansville s West Side early Monday morning was shot in his vehicle while waiting for a traffic light to change. The victim is Dashambe Ignacio Atkins, 25, of Evansville, according to the Vanderburgh County Coroner s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday. Evansville Police Department officers were called to the intersection of North First Avenue and West Virginia Street around 3:20 a.m. to investigate reports of shots fired in the area as well as a wreck. When officers arrived, they found a crashed vehicle with a deceased male in the driver’s seat, later identified as Atkins. It appeared as if he had been shot multiple times, Sgt. Nick Winsett said.

This is breaking a lot of hearts here at Bosse, Athletic Director Tom Bealmear said. Bealmear recalled the former wide receiver s positive energy. He would go out of his way to say hello to me and high five. He had that kind of spirit around everybody. He lifted their spirits,  Bealmear said. He was positive. He was a good guy. Nykara Dixon, who also graduated from Bosse in 2020 and was pictured with him in that homecoming picture, recalled how Toone was always smiling and polite when she saw him after graduation. The two were on Bosse s football homecoming court together in 2019.

The victim has been identified as Richard R. Atkins, age 76, of Evansville. An autopsy has been scheduled for this afternoon. Calab’s mother, Jennifer Schwartz, and his aunt, Nancy Byrd, are CNAs who work hard to provide for their families. And that year was no exception. They worked 16-hour shifts and, to make extra money for the holidays, they worked on Christmas Day. The plan was for their families to celebrate together later in the week. But they never got the chance.
