Meteors
The Coma Berenicids, running now through Saturday, Jan. 23, are the first shower of the year but they are guaranteed to be superseded by what will probably be the best shower of January, if not the year: the Quantarids, a.k.a. as the Bootids, from Friday, Jan. 1 to Tuesday, Jan. 5, peaking on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 120 per hour. The catch is that this is under a nearly full or full moon.
Two other showers also start on Friday, Jan. 1, the Gamma Velids, lasting until Friday, Jan. 15, with a peak of 2 per hour on Tuesday, Jan. 5. and the Delta Cancrids lasting until Sunday, Jan. 31, peaking Sunday, Jan. 17 at 3 per hour.

Photographers from around the world captured Jupiter and Saturn aligning almost perfectly in the night sky this week.
Monday was the closest the two planets have appeared in 800 years the last time they were both this close and visible was in 1226.
The two planets move into alignment, or conjunction, every 20 years. But this year they were close enough to look like a double planet.

Con Kolivas, an engineer and amateur astronomer from Australia, took this photo on Sunday.
Gary Hershorn, a photographer based in New York City, encountered cloudy conditions on Monday. But he captured a shot of the two planets approaching one another the week before, above the Statue of Liberty. Gary Hershorn As a photographer, I have been looking forward to seeing the Christmas Star, he told Business Insider. The two planets have been setting next to the Statue of Liberty for the past week getting a bit closer together each day. It was a beautiful sight to see last week as they came down behind the statue.
