La Niña watch issued by the Climate Prediction Center

We received word from the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) on Monday that they believe La Niña conditions are coming in the next six months, prompting a watch.

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a variation in winds and sea-surface temperatures in the tropical eastern Pacific that tends to have an impact on the weather in the United States and elsewhere. There are three phases: El Niño (warmer temperatures), neutral (near-normal temperatures) and La Niña (cooler temperatures).

Franklin County was ravaged by an EF-3 tornado two years ago today

Happy Monday and welcome to another edition of the Beyond The Forecast newsletter! It’s a bittersweet day for some folks in Franklin County as they look back at an EF-3 tornado that moved through two years ago.
The twister’s path was 8.2 miles long and 250 yards wide. It reached maximum wind speeds of 159 miles per hour and injured two people.
The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Blacksburg conducted the storm survey. You can read about the nitty-gritty details here.
The damage pictured in the header of this newsletter happened on Windy Ridge Road, north of Sydnorsville. Below, you see a modular home on Fishburn Mountain Road that was destroyed by the tornado.

It’s the start of another week in our corner of the Commonwealth and that means a new edition of the WSLS Beyond The Forecast newsletter! This week is a special one as it’s the first time we’re dedicating a few days to talk about severe weather awareness.
There will be five topics covered this week: the difference between a watch and a warning, tornadoes, severe storms, flooding and lightning.
If you’ve ever watched our severe weather coverage on 10 News or if you have our weather app downloaded, you’ve likely seen the words “watch” and “warning.” You should take both words seriously, but they mean slightly different things.
