3 ETFs Perfect to Grow Your IRA | The Motley Fool

Author Bio Chuck Saletta is a Motley Fool contributor. His investing style has been inspired by Benjamin Graham s Value Investing strategy. One of the biggest advantages IRAs have over employer sponsored retirement plans is that IRAs generally offer far more choices in terms of what s available for you to buy. Of course, that advantage can quickly turn into a disadvantage if analysis paralysis  sets in and keeps you from making a decent decision in a timely manner. A good way to get past that risk is to first think about what your strategy is and then find low-cost ETFs that align with your strategy. ETFs generally offer a collection of companies to help mitigate single-company risk while still seeking to deliver on their stated objectives. That feature, along with low overhead costs, make these three ETFs perfect to consider to grow your IRA over time.

Value Has Bounced Back, but It Might Be Too Soon to Call It a Comeback

. Download a complimentary copy of Morningstar ETFInvestor After a long, dark, cold winter, green shoots have emerged across the landscape of systematic value strategies those that buy stocks that are cheap relative to some fundamental measure of their worth. Exactly what has plagued these approaches for so long has been widely debated. And while the recent thaw has been welcomed by many long-suffering value disciples, even some of the factor’s biggest fans worry that it may be a false spring. Here, I’ll look back at value’s cold streak, survey some of its potential causes, touch on the catalysts behind its turnaround, and explore whether there’s any value left in value today.

With Specialty Funds, Bigger Has Been Better

At First Glance I have long distrusted specialized equity funds, which emphasize a single industry or investment theme. Such funds tend to be launched by marketing departments, rather than by portfolio managers. In the words of Morningstar’s Ben Johnson, companies that offer specialty funds can relate “differentiated narratives.” Regrettably, investors can’t spend differentiated narratives. We will therefore evaluate specialty funds not by the elegance of their promises, but instead by their performance records. At first glance, the results look respectable. The chart below shows the percentage of specialty funds that outgained Vanguard 500 Index (VFINX) for the 25 years from January 1996 through December 2020.
