A still-secret Fraser Health Authority (FHA) plan will show the health region needs a major increase in hospital beds in the coming years, according to an outspoken surgeon. Dr. Bernard Perey, deputy chief of surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital, said the findings will show 700 more beds are needed over the next five years – an increase of more than one-third from current levels of 2,000. “That’s a hospital bigger than the (Royal) Columbian that’s going to be needed,” Perey said. “There’s no way they’re going to be able to pay for that. It’s insane.” The master plan that maps out where acute care beds should go in the future and how many will be needed as the population grows and ages is the product of Fraser Health’s 18-month-long Acute Care Capacity Initiative.
