Shortly after the accident Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan denied knowing that the downed warplane was Russian, but recently released court testimony exposed that they were fully aware of this fact. Testifying in court on August 15, 2017, Staff Colonel Ali Durmuş said the Turkish Combat Air Force Command reported to Geeral Abidin Ünal, a senior officer who worked at Air Force headquarters at the time, that two Russian fighter jets were violating Turkish airspace over the Hatay (Turkish) and Latakia (Syrian) border region.
