I Was Sexually Abused by My High School Coach Forty Years Later, I m Taking Action

Courtesy Marisa Sutera Strange I am an elite masters runner, specializing in the mile, 5K, and cross country. I’m 57 years old now, and running has been my salvation for decades. My high school coach abused me more than 40 years ago, and I’m still coming to terms with what happened. While I was in high school, my favorite event was the 400-meter hurdles. The event was new for girls and a good fit for me, because it used all of my athletic abilities. I found it challenging and fun, and it allowed me to excel. In 1980, a new assistant track coach appeared, who was also a teacher at the high school, and he seemed to take an interest in me right from the beginning. Running was my whole world at that time, and I was barely more than a child, naive to the world around me. Looking back, I can see how he preyed upon my innocence.

More Hudson Valley Students Won t Return to Classrooms In January

Due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases, another Hudson Valley school district is adjusting its schedule and keeping kids out of the classroom. Recently the City of Poughkeepsie announced that they were postponing their transition to in-class learning until the middle of January. Other school districts, including Webutuck, Saugerties and Arlington have paused in-person instruction until after the holidays. On Tuesday, Kingston City School District announced that they will not be welcoming students back into the classroom after the holiday break. On January 4, students will begin at-home learning. During this time, faculty and staff are still required to report to school but will be teaching students remotely. A message from the school district explained that the extended closure is the best option to ensure the health of our entire community after the holidays.

Major Snowfall Blankets Hudson Valley Roads Thursday Morning

Major Snowfall Blankets Hudson Valley Roads Thursday Morning Snow accumulations of a foot and more are making travel tough for Hudson Valley commuters on Thursday morning. Early Thursday saw snowfall amounts in Poughkeepsie just under a foot. Some areas received much more, and the winter storm isn t finished just yet. A. Boris Thursday morning is turning out to be a tough travel day, with plows having a tough time keeping up with the falling snow. Major roads throughout the Hudson Valley are passable, but speeds are reduced due to wind-driven snow that is causing visibility problems. There are travel bans in effect throughout the Hudson Valley with municipalities asking only essential personnel to be on the roads. Empty tractor-trailers and tandems are not being allowed on I-84, the New York State Thruway and other major roads.

Why I m Angry School Canceled Online Learning For a Snow Day

In September many school districts across the Hudson Valley announced the end of snow days. So what happened? With students and teachers connecting online for much of the week, many school districts across the Hudson Valley revealed a plan to eliminate snow days. Teachers and students who were scheduled to come in on days with inclement weather would just stay home and have a remote learning day. Makes sense, right? Earlier this week, our family received a letter from the Wappingers Central School District saying that because of a great deal of feedback and their own reflection on the policy, they decided to go back on that plan and give teachers and students the day off during snowstorms.
