Indianola artist Megan Shipley s new mural in Indianola s downtown Square is adding a colorful and interactive new element to a city center overtaken by the mess of two big construction projects.
Shipley was hired by Lula Belle Designs owner Kamie Haynes to paint a new mural on the side of 114 W. Ashland Ave., where Haynes recently relocated her business. Prior to Shipley s new project, a different mural commemorating a RAGBRAI route that went through Indianola in 2009 held the spot in Ashland Alley. We want to bring people to Indianola and encourage people to want to hang out, Shipley said. This is the kind of just the type of artwork that I do and it just happens to be in line with what Kamie wanted and her style and her shop s.

So I don’t often write place name stories without knowing the meaning of the place name.
But Selkirk is one where I’m going to take a shot anyway.
I used to live on Oil Creek Rd. and, from time to time, we’d drive through the bustling metropolis of Selkirk. (Look it up on a map if you have no idea what I’m talking about.)
I remember the road Selkirk Rd. coming down the hill to this relatively open area, a village of Selkirk sign and a few houses. That was that.
My family moved to this area from northeast Ohio so we would kinda chuckle at the fact that the place had a name… but very few occupants.

The Youngsville Free Methodist church will host its annual Lenten fish fry dinners from 5 to 7 p.m. Fridays starting Feb. 19.
The cost is $10 donation per meal, with dine-in or take-out orders available. The meal includes Fish, choice of potato (baked or fries), choice of coleslaw or applesauce, and roll.
The Youngsville Free Methodist Church’s Food Ministry is available on a first-come, first-served basis every Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until gone (as food quantity varies weekly). Food is also available on a first-come, first-served basis on the first and third Monday and Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until food is gone.

QUEENSBURY The Warren County Historical Society would like to open a visitor s center and museum dedicated to Joseph Warren, the county s namesake and one of the men killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Historians said his ownership of enslaved people would be part of the eventual installation.
