As seen from wooden steps, a sign at Weko Beach in Bridgman warns hikers to stay off of the fragile dune. A treacherous ice shelf forms on Lake Michigan, but you can see still open water from shore. Climbing the shelf can be fatal because of trap doors in the uneven ice.

Plus, trying to find someone to watch your pets when you go on vacation can be a pain in the butt. Kill two birds with one stone and take them with you.
There s tons of great places to visit that are pet-friendly in Michigan. You can visit some national parks, hangout on the beach or even kayak with your furry BFF. If you re looking for a weekend getaway, check out these pet-friendly hotels.
Heavy snow refreshed a lot of our trails and hills Tuesday, but it wasnât quite as thick as we needed for some of our local snow-sport destinations.
Then again, some parks in Berrien County already had a base and should be ready for play. And, prior to this latest storm, the Michigan s downhill ski resorts were already rockin it with lots of coverage.
You just gotta check before you go.
St. Patrickâs County Park in South Bend was rolling its cross-country ski trails Tuesday afternoon, though it wasnât deep enough to set tracks. And staff say that, after a couple of tubing parties this week, weâll see if the tubing hill stays snow-covered for public use this weekend.Â
Winter start-ups
⢠Downhill skiing: Swiss Valley Ski & Snowboard Area in Jones fired up its snow guns Monday night and will continue making snow each night this week as long as thereâs the right combination of temperatures below 28 degrees and dry enough air, says Mike Panich, whoâs helping with public relations and management. Timber Ridge and Bittersweet resorts near Kalamazoo also started making snow. Opening dates are yet to be determined. When Swiss Valley does open, Panich says, there will be food service but not for indoor dining, per state restrictions; youâll have to eat outside, like at a picnic table or in your car. See my Nov. 25 column for more about whatâs new this season at Swiss Valley.
