Candidate filed under wrong party
Joe Burkot will appear on the Democratic ballot as a candidate for Mercersburg Borough Council, but he is actually a Republican.
Burkot s nomination petition identified him as a Republican, but it was accidentally placed with the Democratic petitions after he turned it in, according to Byer, the county deputy clerk. It was as simple as it got placed in the wrong box, she said.
There is no time to fix the ballots. Byers only learned of the error in the first week of May, when Burkot brought it to her attention. The ballots were already printed and the vote-counting machines were already programmed.

WARREN – A man who was revived from an apparent drug overdose while awaiting sentencing last week on burglary charges was sentenced today to nine months behind bars, according to court and jail records.
Chad Decost, 34, Warren, pleaded guilty in April to burglary and possessing criminal tools in connection to a 2019 burglary of firearms from a Warren Township home, according to court records. Two counts of grand theft were dismissed as part of the plea deal, according to prosecutors.
He was scheduled to be sentenced May 4, but a deputy found him “completely unconscious” outside of the courtroom, according to a sheriff’s report. The man was revived with two doses of Narcan and transported to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment.
With the return of earmarks, also known as pork barrel spending, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan is asking for money for projects for various Mahoning Valley organizations, including Mercy Health-Youngstown, Mahoning County High School, Gleaners Food Bank as well as road improvement work and bike trails.
House Democrats announced they would bring back earmarks that were banned in 2011 when Republicans took control of the House. Before the ban, opponents said earmarks were abused and had little oversight.
House Democrats changed the rules with the return of earmarks. Members had to make the projects public along with an explanation for each proposal, and the number of requests is restricted.
