Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton has received the Cream of the CROP award.
The Wheaton church ranked in the top 50 in the United States for donations to the CROP Hunger Walk in 2020, at more than $8,000.
This year s Glen Ellyn/Wheaton Area CROP Hunger Walk is scheduled for Sunday, May 2.

Taxpayers anticipated to save $9M with COD board refunding of bonds

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees at its Feb. 18 meeting unanimously approved the issuance of approximately $33.7 million in General Obligation Refunding Bonds, which will yield property tax savings for Community College District 502 taxpayers of approximately $9 million. We are very pleased to take this opportunity to exercise fiscal responsibility and save our taxpayers money, said Board Chairman Christine Fenne.
The bonds, issued in 2011 to finance capital projects including building renovations, carried interest rates ranging from 4 percent to 5.25 percent. Through the refunding, the remaining principal balance will be paid off in 2031.

It seems incredible that one year has passed since COVID-19 forced us into remote learning and working environments.
No one could have predicted the scope of the pandemic s impact. People lost jobs, students put educational plans on hold, and families did their best to adapt to a new routine we all thought would last a few months at most.
As the months passed, education was hit hard and community colleges, in particular, bore the brunt. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, enrollment at community colleges dropped 10 percent from fall 2019 to fall 2020.

The office of Rep. Lauren Underwood (IL-14) recently announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded Educare West DuPage $1,112,540 to strengthen their Early Head Start early education program.
Educare West DuPage is a part of a national network of Head Start providers working to ensure more children have access to high-quality early education.
Early Head Start is one of the most successful federal anti-poverty programs that ensures young children have high-quality learning opportunities. I m proud to support this program for families in our community, and am grateful to the dedicated teachers and staff who serve in Early Head Start classrooms, Underwood said. I remain dedicated to advocating for the resources children and families in northern Illinois need to thrive.
