Obituary for Gerry Hughes
We have learnt with sadness of the recent death of our former colleague Gerry Hughes on 12th March.
Gerry was a Visiting Professor in Trinity Business School since 2006. Prior to this he was a Research Professor at the ESRI.
Gerry’s particular interest was labour economics and pension policy. He was an expert in both. His publications in the area of labour economics were both numerous and widely cited. His research on pension policy, in particular the difficult issue of tax reliefs, earned him an international reputation.
Since he joined the School he continued to research and publish widely in the area of pension policy, co-editing five books, and publishing numerous articles. He gave papers on pension policy at conferences in Ireland, the U.S. Belgium, Germany, and other countries He also found the time to contribute to the section on Ireland of the European Social Protection Network.
