More than 60,000 people have received their first dose of the vaccine in the town as the programme enters its next phase. Warrington Clinical Commissioning Group and GP practices are now offering appointments for the vaccine to specific groups of unpaid and informal carers. At present, carers who qualify at this time are only those who are eligible for a carer’s allowance or those who are the sole or primary carer of an elderly or disabled person who is at increased risk of Covid-19 mortality, and therefore clinically vulnerable.

The news comes as vaccines are set to be offered to people in the town over 70 and those who are classed as clinically extremely vulnerable. The aim then is to offer first doses of the vaccine to everyone in the top four priority groups in both Warrington and Halton by mid-February. Dr Andrew Davies, clinical chief officer at Warrington Clinical Commissioning Group, explained: “This week, we will start the process of inviting those over 70 and in the clinically extremely vulnerable group to be vaccinated.

GP practices have been working with care homes to deliver vaccinations as quickly as possible. Many care home residents and staff have already received the first dose of the vaccine, with remaining homes being booked in for vaccinations over the course of the week. Staff at St Rocco’s Hospice have also been vaccinated against the virus.

He was given the jab by Dr Laura Mount, GP at Folly Lane Medical Centre and also a clinical director of the Central and West Warrington Primary Care Network. She says it was an honour to begin the programme and is encouraging everyone to embrace the vaccine offer when they are contacted by their local GP surgery.
