Duluth vet recalls time overseas on 30th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm Unmute DULUTH, MN. This weekend marked the 13th anniversary of the first Gulf War. The war started after then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein invaded the oil rich nation of Kuqait in August of 1990. In response, the United States teamed up with NATO allies and the middle eastern countries of Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Egypt to oppose Iraqi aggression. Then on January 16th, 1991 President George H.W. Bush ordered operation Desert Storm, a 100-hour land war, which expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait. And one local veteran is lucky to be alive to this day from his time spent in Iraq.
