One of the easiest, most painless binge-watching projects you could embark upon during the pandemic is to dive into the canon of Walt Disney Animation Studios films. Sure, you could add Pixar to the list, but getting to experience the depth and breadth of mainstream animation history, from
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to
Raya and the Last Dragon, would be an effective crash course, and a mighty enjoyable one to boot thanks to the still fairly young streaming service Disney+.
But while Disney+ enables viewers to stream everything from Marvel superhero fare to old
Apple TV+ will soon release the animated short
Blush, the first project under its multi-year partnership with Skydance Animation. The deal, which we first reported in February, includes animated series as well as feature films.
Blush follows a stranded horticulturist-astronaut who must learn to survive after he crash lands on a desolate dwarf planet. When an ethereal visitor arrives, the once-lone traveler discovers the joy in building a new life and realizes the universe has delivered astonishing salvation.
Blush is written and directed by Disney veteran Joe Mateo (head of story,
Big Hero 6; story artist,
Tangled), and shares Mateo’s “deeply personal journey of healing, hope and the undeniably human moments of being rescued by love.”

Some of the best stories come in the form of short films. The creative ability to take a full and complex story and fit it into a matter of minutes is sheer brilliance. Disney+ is launching a new series to celebrate unique and magical shorts from marginalized filmmakers.
LAUNCHPAD, premiering on May 28, will debut six short films with rich, interesting plots.
With
LAUNCHPAD, Disney aims to diversify the types of stories that get funding and heightened platforms. It also wants to make these stories accessible to viewers. The selections are from a pool of more than 1100 applicants in the US; the chosen ones got to work with executive mentors from Disney+, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production.
