Oscars: Three Women From Disney and Pixar Among SciTech Awards Honorees Carolyn Giardina Oscar Statuettes
Seventeen scientific and technical developments representing 55 individuals including three women, which may be a first in a single season will be honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with Scientific and Technical Awards. The honorees and their work, which includes advancement in hair simulation and sound tech, will be recognized during a virtual presentation hosted by filmmaker Nia DaCosta (
Little Woods) on Feb. 13 starting at 1 p.m. PT on the Oscars’ website.
Science and technology for filmmaking is an area still largely dominated by men. In fact, since 1961, only 20 women have received Scientific and Technical Awards. Raya and the Last Dragon will cost Disney+ subscribers the same as they were charged when the studio s live-action version of
Mulan hit the streamer. That s right, Mouseketeers, Premier Access for the title will be priced at $29.99.
While $29.99 might feel like a stab to your bank account at first, it s worth noting that the amount is less than it would cost you to see the film in theaters. It s true. When Walt Disney Animation Studios first announced their first Southeast Asia-inspired animation
Raya and the Last Dragon, I was extremely excited at the prospect of having a Southeast Asian princess in the Disney family, especially as a Thai American. This would be the first time that a Disney animated feature film would feature a Southeast Asian lead.
Raya and the Last Dragon is set in the fantasy world of Kumandra, where humans and dragons once coexisted. But when the Druun, an evil entity, threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save Kumandra. Now, 500 years later, the Druun have returned and it is up to a lone warrior, Raya, to find the legendary last dragon, Sisu, and save her people.

Raya and the Last Dragon (
watch the new trailer!) last week and we learned all about the anticipated Walt Disney Animation Studios film. Joining the event were directors Don Hall and Carlos Lopez
Estrada, producer Osnat Shurer, and writers Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim.
We got a chance to check out some footage from the film, as well as a video tutorial on how to draw the adorable Tuk Tuk from Head of Animation Malcolm Pierce.
Coming to both theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on March 5th, the movie features the voices of Awkwafina as Sisu, the last dragon in Kumandra, and Kelly Marie Tran as Raya, the brave young woman trying to save her land and her father.
