Supposedly, writing and whiskey go hand in hand. There are stacks of books written by notoriously drunk authors, and the tales of their drunken debauchery are much taller. Creating a fine whiskey is similar to creating a literature masterpiece, so it is quite apt that a whiskey be branded Writers’ Tears.

Belfast Distillery names new CEO 5th March, 2021 by Melita Kiely John Kelly has been appointed chief executive officer of Belfast Distillery Company, maker of McConnell’s Irish whiskey. John Kelly is the new chief executive officer of Belfast Distillery Company Kelly, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the drinks sector, previously worked at Walsh Whiskey as commercial director. Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Kelly also worked in a range of sales, marketing and general manager roles in Ireland, Europe and the Middle East during his 22-year term with Diageo. Kelly will oversee the expansion of McConnell’s Irish whiskey, which launched a year ago. The new CEO will work to grow the brand’s ‘significant success’ in the US and look to agree additional distribution deals worldwide.

Drop of the pure: Bursary for IT Carlow brewing and distilling student Stephen Foster Prize is awarded by Walsh Whiskey (producers of Writers’ Tears and The Irishman premium whiskeys) Reporter: sam.matthews@kilkennypeople.ie Bernard Walsh of Walsh Whiskey, pictured with the 3rd Annual Walsh Whiskey Bursary cheque for €1,000, won by Stephen Foster );   ); Stephen Foster, a second year brewing and distilling undergraduate at Institute of Technology Carlow, is the third recipient of the annual Walsh Whiskey €1,000 bursary.  The prize is awarded by Walsh Whiskey (producers of Writers’ Tears and The Irishman premium whiskeys) to the student with the highest first year grades in the Bachelor of Science in Brewing and Distilling course at Institute of Technology Carlow. The brewing and distilling programme at IT Carlow was the first of its kind in Ireland when initiated in 2017.
