DMK slams Centre over its decision to not to hold winter session of Parliament

TR Baalu alleged the government did not consult opposition parties on the matter.

The DMK on Thursday slammed the Centre for its decision to not to hold the winter session of Parliament in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and charged it with having a big brother attitude by ignoring opposition parties on such matters.
DMK MP and its Parliamentary Party Leader TR Baalu said that while issues like the ongoing farmers protest and border row with China had to be discussed in the Parliament, it is very concerning that the Central BJP government does not want to hold the winter session.

Amid the ongoing protests by Congress MPs from Punjab, the government said a majority of parties in Parliament prefer doing away with the winter session and it is willing to call the Budget session in January 2021.
“At present, we are in the middle of December and a Covid vaccine is expected soon. I have informally contacted floor leaders of various political parties, and they have expressed their concerns about the pandemic and suggested doing away with the winter session,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a letter to Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha.

The Centre on Tuesday (December 15) said that there will be no winter session of Parliament this time because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi confirmed this in a letter responding to Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, who has demanded for a short Winter Session. Chaudhary had asked fora short Winter Session to discuss new farm laws that have sparked massive farmer protests near Delhi borders.
According to Joshi, all parties supprted the scrapping of the Winter session in order to curb the spread of coronavirus and hold the Budget Session in January.
NEW DELHI: After the government decided against convening the Winter Session of the Parliament due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Congress has slammed the Centre for subverting parliamentary democracy , alleging that the opposition was not consulted on the matter.
Speaking to IANS, former Union minister Manish Tewari, who even protested at the Jantar Mantar demanding the session be held, said, Never before in the history of the Indian Parliament has parlimentary democracy been subverted in this manner. When the standing committees of the Parliament are meeting, joint parliamentary committees are being convened three times a week, then why is the government running away from the Winter Session and hiding behind a pandemic that it has thoughrly and absolutely mismanaged?
