Every fire station across Malta and Gozo will now be manned by a station officer 24 hours a day, after the Civil Protection Department promoted 18 workers to that rank.
The 18 newly-promoted officers will be responsible for managing CPD stations and their staff, which has been bolstered by the addition of 18 new assistance and rescue officers.
Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri presided over a ceremony to mark the new appointments, held at the CPD’s Xemxija station. Camilleri praised the CPD for its work and said the government’s aim was to modernise its infrastructure to help it provide the best possible service.
An inmate who has filed an application claiming inhumane treatment at Corradino Correctional Facility, targeting him and other prisoners, has filed a fresh application claiming he has been placed in solitary confinement.
Brian Vella, 41, who is serving a prison term after being convicted for a double murder, said he has been banned from communicating with the outside world and was placed in solitary confinement as retribution for speaking out on the situation in prison.
Times of Malta reported that following the first application, a search was carried out in the inmate’s cell in his absence and he was stopped from using the prison telephone to communicate with his relatives.

The Correctional Services Agency has denied claims of terror and torture in a brief statement on Saturday after a double murderer filed an application claiming inhumane treatment at Corradino Correctional Facility, targeting him and other prisoners.
“The agency categorically denies these allegations,” the spokesman said on Saturday with reference to the application, adding it would be providing all evidence in court in connection to the case.
Double murderer Brian Vella has asked the courts to launch a magisterial inquiry into what he claims is systematic terror, fear and torture that he and other prisoners are enduring in prison.
