Nearly 2,000 elderly people per day were turned down for care

Nearly 2,000 requests for vital social care have been turned down every single day since Boris Johnson first promised to fix the broken system. Today is the second anniversary of Mr Johnson standing on the steps of Downing Street on his first day as Prime Minister to claim he had already prepared a plan to reform social care. But two years on, no plan has been published – and it is not now expected until the autumn at the earliest. Urging him to get on and publish his proposals, the charity Age UK analysed official statistics which showed that 1.4million requests for care from older people have been turned down since he became PM.

Charities push for PM to honour social care commitment, two years after pledge

Charities say they will continue working to make sure the Government does not “forget the commitment it has made”, exactly two years after the Prime Minister promised to fix the crisis in social care. Some 1.4 million requests for care from older people have been turned down by local authorities in England since Boris Johnson’s historic pledge, according to Age UK. The charity, which analysed data from NHS Digital, said this equates to nearly 14,000 people aged 65 and over a week not getting the vital care and support they believe they need. In 24% of these cases the local council found they did not meet the eligibility criteria for social care support, and in 26% they were referred to other services after being found ineligible, Age UK said.

Fury as care homes lock the elderly in their rooms alone for two weeks after overnight hospital stay

Share Meanwhile, draconian visiting restrictions mean many of the UK’s 400,000 care home residents are still struggling to see loved ones. Since ‘Freedom Day’ on Monday, residents have been allowed unlimited visitors as long as they test negative and wear PPE.  But infection-control procedures mean the best most families can hope for is a pre-booked 30-minute visit once a week. Some have the time measured by an egg-timer. Government guidelines also state visitors should be banned for two weeks if any staff or residents test positive for Covid. With cases rising, growing numbers of homes are once again shutting their doors.
