Some state lawmakers chose to carry their own personal firearms for additional protection on the Legislature’s opening day. While there’s no master list of how many lawmakers carry guns inside the state Capitol, it’s not exactly rare. House and Senate rules do not prohibit the concealed carrying of firearms by legislators.

This is a new start for us,” said Army veteran Scott Schulz, 60, of Tacoma. Schulz has relied on gainful employment at the Veterans Independent Enterprises of Washington (VIEW) for 25 years, but fell on uncertain times when the paychecks were late or non-existent.
