Although born in Dublin, Mark spent most of his summers in Mullinalaghta as both his parents, Joe and Carmel Degnan, hail from the north Longford half parish. In addition to his senior championship medal, Mark also won Leader Cup and Reserve League medals with Mullinalaghta. Mark is one of three locals to be appointed partners at Deloitte Ireland, as he was joined by James Anderson from Mullahoran and Loch Gowna’s Roisín Fitzpatrick.

Humility, respect and integrity : Norman Houston, former head of the Northern Ireland Bureau in Washington DC, remembered

When a friend dies, it is often the small things one misses; the details rather than the big picture. In the days since Norman Houston died, many people, often those in public life whose work brought them into close contact with him in Washington, DC, have rightly paid tribute and expressed sympathy online. The artist Colin Davidson, whose large-scale portraits hang in the Lyric Theatre, summed it up in his Twitter tribute, writing of Norman s empathy, selflessness, decency, warmth, professionalism, loyalty, inclusivity, positivity, balance as the qualities than made him unique in this world . For me, one of Norman s greatest qualities was that he could make links and see connections that few others could so readily identify.

A moment for celebration and reflection

The passionate commitment which Bill Clinton as President showed in supporting the push for peace on our island has been well documented. Unlike many stories which can become exaggerated through retelling over the years, I think we actually under-appreciate the depth and breadth of the Washington-Ireland connections which were built during that time. The high-profile summits and the long hours spent encouraging parties to commit to democratic politics are rightly remembered as vital to achieving the end of the violence. However, President Clinton and his administration went much further than this. They supported the idea of peace as a great opportunity to fight sectarianism and support development. That s the biggest reason why it was important for him to visit Dundalk and to speak about communities on both sides of the border.
