The Washington Black Lives Matter Alliance (WBLMA) issued a letter to the FBI’s Seattle office this week, calling on the department to open an investigation into Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer over a January incident where he called the police on a Black newspaper delivery driver.
The WBLMA outlined a list of allegations in its petition to the FBI, including that Troyer “abused his authority,” violated the civil rights of a private citizen “engaged in lawful acts,” obstructed justice, and flouted the Fourth Amendment guarantee against unreasonable searches and seizures.

By law, Washington police must stop excessive force wherever they see it, but a bill passed by the state legislature would make that law a workplace policy.
Sponsored by state Sen. Manka Dhingra, D-Redmond, Senate Bill 5066 makes it a police officer s duty to intervene, physically or otherwise, when their peers use excessive force or other wrongdoing contrary to law or department policy. The bill would give police agencies until 2022 to hammer out written policies detailing such duties and provide related training. Those policies will be subject to review by the state Criminal Justice Training Commission.

SEATTLE At Seattle Children’s, a father’s request for staff to use a needleless injection device on his child as the doctor ordered instead of a numbing cream ended with security taking him from the room.
“As a black man, being escorted away from my very sick child by a security officer left me powerless, embarrassed, and seen in the eyes of other families on the unit as a criminal,” he said, according to an internal report led by the hospital’s Center for Diversity and Health Equity.
