ST. GEORGE Debbie Zockoll was well known in Washington County as a runner who participated in every single St. George marathon. Many longtime residents also knew she fought cancer for more than ten years, but on March 1st, not even Zockoll could run away from it anymore.
On the field of life, it s not so much the preparation or outcome that matters, only that you play the game and give it your best. It s a lesson Josh Zockoll learned from his mom while playing baseball. It s also one he s now passing onto his children because his mother is no longer around to do it herself.

The South Washington County School District, which includes Woodbury and Cottage Grove, made cuts last month because of financial challenges caused by the pandemic, but some parents in the district are questioning the decisions.
WOODBURY, Minn. (FOX 9) - The South Washington County School District, which includes Woodbury and Cottage Grove, made cuts last month because of financial challenges caused by the pandemic, but some parents in the district are questioning the decisions.
The cuts will remove the fourth and fifth-grade orchestra and band program from the elementary school.
Honoring local pioneers: CHS hosts Black History Month program

CHIPLEY Chipley High School hosted a Black History Month program Monday, February 22. The program honored several Washington County pioneers and featured virtual guest speaker, Senator Bobby Powell, Jr., as well as performances and presentations by school district staff and former and current students.
The these was “Love Wins over Adversity – Know the Past; Shape the Future.”
Honored at the event were:
Marvis Jett, the first Black secretary to work at the Washington County School District office. She worked for WCSD for more than 36 years and is known within the district as a dedicated substitute teacher, a role she has served since 2002.

Then a colleague fell ill last year with an aggressive brain cancer. It was the seventh cancer diagnosis among staff at Park High School in Cottage Grove in six years, Diediker said nearly all in people under age 50. Before long, she and some colleagues had drawn up a list of nearly 30 current and former Park High staff who contracted various cancers since 1990, some of them twice. Two one of whom since died from the cancer shared the same classroom.
ST. GEORGE A man was taken into custody by police following a 4-hour incident in Little Valley that involved the SWAT team and multiple officers that was set in motion the night before when officers responded to a report of a family fight at the same residence.
After a more than 3-hour standoff, a 46-year-old man surrendered to authorities and was transported to jail following an incident that involved St. George Police Department s SWAT team. The team was deployed to a residence on East 3770 South in Little Valley to assist in searching for the man while the entire block was cordoned off by police, St. George Police Sgt. Tyrell Bangerter told St. George News at the scene.
