Daunte Wright shooting: Brooklyn Center cop Kim Potter, chief resign

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. – The police officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb and the city s police chief resigned, the mayor announced Tuesday.  The death of the 20-year-old Black man has shaken a city already unsettled after George Floyd died about 10 miles away during a police arrest last May, an incident that led to nationwide protests calling for an end to racial injustice and police brutality. Officer Kim Potter, 48, a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, submitted her letter of resignation Tuesday morning, Mayor Mike Elliott said in a news conference. He said the city did not ask her to resign but had been moving toward firing her.

Dozens Arrested After Second Night of Violent Protests

John Minchillo/AP (KNSI) Police and protesters clashed for the second night in a row as tensions flared following the fatal officer-involved shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center Sunday afternoon. About 40 arrests were made overnight as a 7:00 p.m. curfew went into place but was ignored by hundreds as bottles, rocks, concrete chunks, fireworks, and frozen cans of pop were hurled at officers as they held the line against the angry mob that had shown up at the Brooklyn Center Police Department. Minnesota State Patrol Colonel Matt Langer says law enforcement showed amazing restraint under the conditions. “The troopers and the officers, deputies and conservation officers stood and protected that building courageously and bravely and were shelled pretty significantly with objects by the crowd.”

Former Minnesota officer Kim Potter may face charges in death of Daunte Wright

Potter, a 26-year veteran of the police force and head of its police union, had been on administrative leave when she submitted her resignation along with police Chief Tim Gannon on Tuesday. In her one-paragraph letter, Potter said she loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately. The announcement came after two consecutive nights of riots and looting. More than 2,000 National Guard troops are on hand to assist local authorities in maintaining the peace.
