Why Kim Potter Was Not Charged With Murdering Daunte Wright

The family of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, have called for more serious charges to be filed against the former police officer who fatally shot him during a traffic stop in Minnesota.
Kim Potter, who is white, resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department shortly after the shooting on April 11. She was later charged with second-degree manslaughter, an offense that carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
Potter, a 26-year veteran of the department, mistook her firearm for a Taser, according to the city s police chief who also resigned after Wright s shooting.

The next court hearing for Kim Potter the former Brooklyn Center police officer that authorities say shot and killed Daunte Wright is scheduled for May 17.
The hearing will be done remotely by Judge Regina Chu. Potter s case is being handled by the Washington County Attorney s Office after the case was handed over from Hennepin County in order to avoid any conflict of interest.

MINNEAPOLIS The funeral for Daunte Wright, the 20-year-old who was shot and killed by a police officer in Brooklyn Center, will be held at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church on Bryant Avene in Minneapolis, according to a news report.
The funeral will take place on April 22 at 12 p.m., FOX 9 reported. It s not yet known if the service will be open to the public.
Rev. Al Sharpton, whose National Action Network group is paying for the funeral expenses, will give a eulogy at the funeral.

The former Brooklyn Center, Minn., police officer charged in the killing of Daunte Wright made her first appearance in court Thursday as members of the Wright family continued their call for consequences.
Police officials have said Kim Potter, a 48-year-old white woman, mistook her handgun for her Taser when she fatally shot Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, on Sunday. In body camera footage, Potter can be heard yelling Taser! just before shooting him.
The Washington County Attorney s Office has charged Potter with second-degree manslaughter. She faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Potter was arrested Wednesday and released later that day after posting a $100,000 bond.
