On 4/30/21 at 6:01 AM EDT
The family of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, have called for more serious charges to be filed against the former police officer who fatally shot him during a traffic stop in Minnesota.
Kim Potter, who is white, resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department shortly after the shooting on April 11. She was later charged with second-degree manslaughter, an offense that carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
Potter, a 26-year veteran of the department, mistook her firearm for a Taser, according to the city s police chief who also resigned after Wright s shooting.

The next court hearing for Kim Potter the former Brooklyn Center police officer that authorities say shot and killed Daunte Wright is scheduled for May 17.
The hearing will be done remotely by Judge Regina Chu. Potter s case is being handled by the Washington County Attorney s Office after the case was handed over from Hennepin County in order to avoid any conflict of interest.
Gov. Tim Walz has been given yet another batch of finalists to fill the seat of a retiring District Court judge.
On April 15, the state’s Judicial Selection Commission recommended three finalists for Walz to consider as the replacement for 10th Judicial District Court Judge Kathleen A. Mottl.
Here are the finalists the commission offered to the governor:
Amy Reed-Hall, an assistant Anoka County Attorney who prosecutes adult felony cases, with an emphasis on cases of abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults. She is a member of the Anoka County Elder Abuse Community Response Committee and Anoka County Vulnerable Adult Multi-Disciplinary Team. She also is active with the Minnesota Elder Justice Center and is part of a team that trains Minnesota agencies to investigate elder abuse and neglect.
