Sandersville 11-year-old charged with 3 counts of arson

SANDERSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – An 11-year-old is charged with three counts of arson after three recent fires.
Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran wrote on the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page that the charges are a result of a Park Avenue apartment fire in Sandersville on July 1 and two separate fires on July 4 in Bartow.
The juvenile is being held in a state juvenile facility awaiting a hearing in Washington County Juvenile Court.
“I appreciate the cooperation between the Washington County Fire Fighters, State Fire Marshal’s Office and collaboration of local law enforcement from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Sandersville Police Department with bringing this case to a resolution in a timely manner,” Cochran wrote.
Washington County governmentâs new $73 million budget was passed last week, and includes a $44.9 million general fund budget balanced by moving money from capital projects and a variety of restricted and committed reserve accounts.
County commissioners voted to erase a $3 million shortfall without taking dollars from the countyâs $16 million general fund reserve.
Washington County Mayor Joe Grandy said a policy endorsed by the commission requires the county to maintain a reserve amount equal to four months of spending in the budget.
Grandy said dipping into general fund reserves would negatively impact the countyâs financial and bond rating.
Commissioners rejected an earlier plan to balance the general fund budget by taking $3 million in local option sales tax dollars that have been earmarked for city and county schools for more than 30 years.
