The firm in the settlement denies responsibility. But the $2.5 million, paid into an escrow account by insurer Continental Casualty, settles the allegations by the FDIC that Bansley & Kiener was liable for failing to uncover the fraud. Continental, a unit of Chicago-based commercial insurer CNA Financial, presumably is covering the cost as Bansley & Kiener’s liability insurer.
The settlement was filed Aug. 28 but was disclosed by the FDIC only recently.
The sudden collapse of Washington Federal in December 2017 followed by less than two weeks the hanging death of its CEO, John Gembara, which was ruled a suicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner. Gembara was the grandson of the founder of the bank, which served members of the Daley family among other Bridgeport notables.
