The Montgomery County Council will introduce another resolution in support of District of Columbia statehood on Tuesday.
The resolution is sponsored by Council President Tom Hucker and Councilmembers Nancy Navarro and Evan Glass.
This resolution is in support of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s latest resolution, which calls for the District’s statehood. The Metropolitan. Washington Council of Governments is made up of 24 of the National Capital Region’s local governments and their officials. Members pull from the Montgomery County Council, Maryland and Virginia legislature and the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
The resolution, H.R. 15, would give the 700,000 D.C. residents representation in Congress and autonomy, according to one of the lead sponsors, Councilmember Nancy Navarro.
Nearly one-third of the people killed in traffic crashes in the D.C. area last year were pedestrians or bicyclists, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments said Monday.
Traffic was down on area roads in 2020 because of the pandemic, but 98 people on bikes or on foot were killed in crashes, 29% of the total, the council said in a statement.
The numbers come at the beginning of the Street Smart campaign, which runs through May 16. The program features stepped-up enforcement of traffic safety laws that protect pedestrians and bicyclists, including the law that drivers must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. Violations can lead to fines of up to $500 and points on a driver’s license.

The board of directors of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments unanimously approved a resolution this week urging Congress to establish the state of Washington, D.C. without delay.
The COG board is composed of elected officials from 24 area governments representing the District of Columbia, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia.
