(Port of Seattle Image) The Port of Seattle and non-profit strategic alliance Washington Maritime Blue continue efforts to merge the region’s longstanding maritime heritage with the modern innovation economy as they launched a new startup accelerator cohort last month. The maritime accelerator program first launched at the beginning of 2020 in partnership with WeWork Labs, the co-working company’s startup incubator. Participating startups get access to mentors and advisors, as well as a chance to attend workshops that help guide entrepreneurs through challenges and obstacles.

The ban on appliances like gas furnaces and gas water heaters in new construction is part of a revised energy code that applies to commercial buildings and to multifamily housing at least four stories tall. The code proposed by Mayor Jenny Durkan passed Seattle City Council 9-0 on Monday. Space heating in new construction must be all-electric by June 1, while new water heaters must use only electricity by the end of the year.

InvestigateWest: Washington state plan would slash emissions Peter Fairley InvestigateWest After more than a decade of the supposedly eco-friendly Pacific Northwest and British Columbia falling short on pledges to fight climate change, a new blueprint emerged last month for how to eliminate all but a sliver of fossil-fuel emissions.  The 428-page plan by Washington state outlines how to make a wholesale shift to renewable energy and meet some of the most ambitious climate-protection goals on the planet. It calls for building a regional network of solar and wind energy stations and transmission lines allowing sharing of power across the western U.S. and Canada.
