The Washington State Department of Health reported this week that are signs in the most recent data that COVID-19 cases may be starting to flatten, but disease activity remains high.
The state said it was too soon to tell whether the flattening trend will continue.
“We are cautiously optimistic about a possible plateau in the most recent data, but we are still in a fourth wave and seeing a number of concerning signs. Friday the DOH released some new data, and the herd immunity was kind of buried mid report.
According to the DOH:
On April 16, the best model-based estimate of overall population immunity was 31.9%.
Estimated immunity from vaccination (about 19.3% of the population) is clearly higher than immunity from previous infection (about 12.6%). These estimates include the time it takes to develop immunity after completing vaccination.
The DOH appeared to more concerned however, with whether case counts will continue to flatten as they appeared to do in early April into May. They said case counts varied from county to county more in this report than in the previous one.

While Washington state fights slowing COVID-19 vaccine demand and tries to fill the gap between those fully vaccinated and the threshold for herd immunity, people who do not go back for their second dose are creating another challenge.
According to statistics released by the Washington State Department of Health, about 13% of Washingtonians who get the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna which require three weeks and four weeks in between doses, respectively are behind on getting their second dose. Just under 5% never got it at all.
