RICHLAND â New homes, apartments, a school and city park could soon replace an aging Richland orchard.
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources plans to start converting 300 acres of agricultural land behind the sprawling Queensgate retail complex into a mostly residential development starting in early January.
The lots are off Kennedy Road, stretching north to the Yakima River, behind the Queensgate Target store, on the southwest border of Richland and West Richland.
The city of Richland rezoned the property about two years ago from agriculture to commercial, residential and public uses, said a state release.
This property is currently leased as an orchard but the fruit trees were reaching the end of their useful life, said the state, and the farmer informed DNR they did not plan to renew the lease.

President-elect Joe Biden formally announced Thursday his intent to nominate former two-term Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to serve in his Cabinet as energy secretary. As governor, her efforts to help the state s economy focused on advancing manufacturing and green energy. She pressed for a move away from oil and toward advanced vehicles and other sources of power, such as solar and wind. After leaving office in Michigan, she moved to the West Coast and taught policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley and became an adviser to the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Clean Energy Program. Biden announced Granholm s nomination among others on his team of climate advisers, including North Carolina s Michael Regan to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior.

Lumberman, a 33-meter Second World War–era steel-hull tugboat, has been floating at the quiet cruise ship dock in Juneau, Alaska, for months, awaiting a watery grave. Abandoned for nearly a decade, the
Lumberman was moored in Juneau’s Gastineau Channel in the early 2000s by its last owner, Brenden Mattson. Two years ago, the tugboat’s anchor line broke, stranding it on state tidelands and creating a jurisdictional hot potato for city, state, and coast guard officials as they debated how to dispose of the vessel.
