Starting May 10, over $10 million in grants available to help nonprofit community organizations

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: May 7, 2021 8 The Washington State Department of Commerce is partnering with ArtsFund to provide over $10 million in grants to help community organizations across the state that have been impacted by the pandemic. The Nonprofit Community Relief grant application portal opens Monday, May 10 for eligible Washington state organizations The grant program focuses on arts, culture, science and heritage nonprofits, as well as organizations whose primary mission is to serve veterans, neighborhood organizations and sports and recreation programs for adults and/or children. Eligible organizations must have 501(c)(3) status, or fiscal sponsorship by a 501(c)(3), with appropriate documentation since their 2019 fiscal year. Additionally, organizations must have operating budgets of at least $25,000.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the pandemic is hurting women’s employment. Many women are being pushed out of the workforce, having to stay home with kids during the pandemic. While Kayla Wambold was not laid off from her job, she was able to find child care. Her sister is watching her children and is getting paid by the state to do it through the Friends, Family and Neighbors program. Wambold still has to pay a co-payment, working through the Department of Children, Youth and Families.

Covered entities will be subject to a statewide emissions cap that decreases over time to match the state’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Under the Climate Commitment Act, the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) will seek to link the cap-and-invest program’s market for emissions allowances and offsets with California’s cap-and-trade program. Tacoma City Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday that requires new city-owned buildings, and buildings undergoing major renovations, to use low-carbon fuels such as biodiesel, renewable diesel, renewable natural gas or electricity. The new policy will become effective Jan. 1, 2022.
