Bernarda “Bernie” Wong built the Chinese American Service League from nothing into one of the city’s most important social service organizations by enlisting support from a long line of political and civic leaders who learned she wouldn’t take no for an answer when it came to helping her community.
Ms. Wong, 77, died early Tuesday from stomach cancer, said her daughter, Jacinta Wong.
Known for her diminutive stature barely 5 feet tall and big, dynamic personality, Ms. Wong forged relationships with mayors, governors and presidents, always in furtherance of her mission to help the people of Chinatown and other immigrants.
Polyamory means multiple loves – a word coined in the late 20th century, with Greek and Latin roots. It usually describes a particular approach to (consensual non-monogamy) that prioritizes ongoing emotional and sexual connections with multiple partners, Addison said. It s not to be confused with polygamy, aka multiple wives – something typically associated with religious or cultural practices, she said.
In the U.S. it dates back at least to the Free Love and transcendentalist movements in the 19th century, though it grew popular with the counterculture and sexual liberation movements of 1960s and early 1970s, according to Adrienne Davis, vice provost of faculty affairs and diversity at Washington University in St. Louis.

ST. LOUIS (AP) Timothy Loehmann wanted to be a police officer like his father. He got a job in Independence, Ohio, but it didn’t go well. His supervisors allowed him to quit after he suffered a “dangerous lack of composure” during firearms training. The department concluded he would “not be able to cope or make good decisions” under stress. The deputy chief wrote Loehmann “could not follow simple directions, could not communicate clear thoughts nor recollections, and his handgun performance was dismal.”
