WEDG, Manufacturers Discuss Labor Recruitment, Retention

As Washington County’s labor force continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, issues of attracting employees and retention have been a priority of the Washington Economic Development Group (WEDG). WEDG Executive Director Mary Audia hosted a roundtable discussion this month with human resources executives from local manufacturing companies Bazooka-Farmstar, LLC., Brava Roof Tile, CIVCO Medical Solutions, and Atlas Roofing. Audia shared the impetus for this discussion, “When I go out and visit with business and industry, the number one thing is, ‘Mary, we need workforce, we need workforce.’ Everywhere you go, ‘We need workforce.’ And I think we hear that across Iowa, that’s a problem across our state, but we want to come up with solutions for what we have control over.”

Washington County Supervisors Discuss How to Spend Federal COVID Funds

The Washington County Board of Supervisors discussed formulating how to spend the approximate $4.27 million in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan that was passed in March during their Tuesday meeting. The supervisors mentioned that they have so far received exactly half of the allocation so far, which can be used in areas including responding to the COVID-19 public health emergency or its negative economic impacts, providing government services to the extent of the reduction in revenue, making necessary investments in water, sewer, or broadband infrastructure, providing premium pay to eligible workers of the county performing essential work during the pandemic, or providing grants to eligible employers that perform essential work.

Washington County Public Health Working on Phase 1B, 1C Vaccine Distribution

Washington County has a 1.1% 14-day average positive COVID-19 test rate as of Tuesday morning. County Public Health Administrator Danielle Pettit-Majewski gave her weekly COVID-19 update during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, informing the board that the county has had six new positive cases in the last seven days, and 58 total active cases. Pettit-Majewski mentioned how the state has directed counties this week to begin Phase 1C of vaccine distribution which covers those 64 years and younger with preexisting conditions that may be at an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. This is estimated to add one million people to the priority group, and Pettit-Majewski stated that the county is not receiving any additional vaccines for the expanded group at this time, but there are additional doses going directly to pharmacies from the federal government. She says the county has been directed to work on the Phase 1C group concurrently with tiers two through five and those
