A new study involving UCLA researchers finds that mobile stroke units (MSUs) - state-of-the-art ambulances built to provide stroke patients with emergency neurological diagnosis and treatment prior to hospital arrival improve patient outcomes and lessen the chance for disability by delivering care faster than standard stroke care.
The UCLA Mobile Stroke Unit serves as a shared regional resource of LA County EMS Provider Agencies, taking patients to 15 different stroke center hospitals within 3 regions in Los Angeles County. The MSU carries a CT scanner that can directly image the brain and blood vessels in the field. UCLA was one of seven national mobile stroke unit programs to participate in the clinical trial, which was presented March 17 at the International Stroke Conference.

Israeli startup BrainQ said that a pilot trial of 25 stroke patients treated with its artificial intelligence (AI)-based electromagnetic therapy has shown “striking” results in reducing disability following a stroke.
The Jerusalem-based startup has developed a wearable hat-like device that looks like a large round hair-dryer. This cloud-connected device aims to treat damaged areas of the brain with electromagnetic waves, or “artificial brainwaves,” that mimic healthy neural networks, to rebalance the brain and restore it to its normal function.
The results of the double-blind randomized controlled pilot trial will be presented at the International Stroke Conference on March 17-19. The data shows that patients recovered 77% faster from the disabilities caused by the stroke and were able to resume normal life.

Dr. Jeffrey Saver, director of the UCLA Comprehensive Stroke and Vascular Neurology Program, has joined the executive committee for a nationwide clinical trial called the Heartline Study. Conducted by Johnson & Johnson, in collaboration with Apple, the study will look at whether heart monitoring features on the Apple Watch, used in combination with an iPhone app, can reduce the risk of stroke.
“The best way to treat an acute stroke is to keep it from happening,” Saver said.
Saver, a senior associate vice chair for clinical research in neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has served as a principal investigator on dozens of clinical trials. His pioneering work on the use of clot-retrieval devices, combined with timely medical interventions, have helped dramatically reduce mortality and disability from stroke.
