Whites Hotel at Middlebrook A NIGHTINGALE court is to open at the Bolton Whites Hotel at Middlebrook in a bid to ease the criminal trials backlog. Final preparations are under way for conference rooms at the hotel, situated at the University of Bolton Stadium, to be converted into courtrooms. Once open, instead of business meetings and other functions, the rooms will host judges and barristers trying cases where defendants are not already remanded in custody and so a secure dock is not required. The venue is the third Nightingale court to be established in Greater Manchester, following the Lowry Theatre in Salford and the Hilton Hotel in Deansgate, Manchester.
Carla Couperthwaite A WOMAN who spat at police officers who were dealing with a disturbance in Halliwell Road, Bolton, on Saturday has been electronically tagged. At Wigan Magistrates’ Court, Carla Couperthwaite, aged 24, of Halliwell Road, pleaded guilty to assaulting one police officer and using racially aggravated threatening behaviour towards another. Police say she was arrested for the offences as officers were trying to prevent a breach of the peace. Couperthwaite was sentenced to a 7pm to 7am curfew for 12 weeks and must participate in 25 days of rehabilitation activities. The court has also ordered her to have treatment for alcohol addiction and she must pay £85 towards prosecution costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Alan Friday A FORMER Cheshire Police officer has been sentenced for harassing his ex-wife after posting pictures of her on a swingers dating website without her consent. Alan Friday, 42, then went on to bombard his ex-wife with phone calls to stop her from reporting him. He committed the offence while he was a serving police officer, posing as the woman in the picture on the Fab-Swingers website and talking to men. When he was caught out, Friday, who is from Liverpool, then emailed his ex-wife in an attempt to stop her from calling the police. The Crown Prosecution Service said that after she told him not to contact her, he bombarded her and her family with phone calls and repeatedly visited a family address where he knew she would be.
